Abstract

25,877. Kerr, C. V., and McEwen, J. H. Nov. 20. Helico-centrifugal pumps; casings; balancing moving parts.-The rotor is formed of helicoidal blades springing from an imperforate conical boss and extending to a uniform distance from the axis to correspond to the cylindrical bore of the casing in which the rotor works. In the example described, oppositely inclined helicoidal blades 23 spring from a double conical boss 18. The fluid passes from the rotor to the volute discharge chamber through an annular port 24 of uniform radial cross-section. The fluid is guided to the rotor on each side by a volute suction chamber 3. The natural endlong balancing of the rotor, which diminishes in value with the discharge, is supplemented by means of annular cups formed in the sleeves 20 on the rotor, into which pressure fluid from the discharge can pass by way of ports 9. The pressure in the cups varies with the leakage out to the suction chamber and that varies with the displacement of the rotor. The castings 6 that carry the bearings &c. are secured in gaps in the casing concentric with, and slightly larger in diameter than the rotor so that the rotor can readily be removed.
