onNfrRrrUGAL PUMP.
To all Lehel/L it may commet.'
Y le it known that l, it UeoLr SALZER, a subject oi the Emperor of Austria-llungary, residing at 'l`ren'.n, n, in the county ol'v l\lercer and State ol' New Jersey, have invented a certain new and usei'ul improvement in Centrifugal Pumps, of which thc following is a specilication. v T he invention relates to multiple centrifugal pumps, and consists in the means for -quilibratingr liquid pressure exerted at oppo-V mcans for preventing entrance o1' air at the shaft journal on the delivery side'of the all as more particularly pointed out in the claims.
in the accompanying drawings-,Figure 1 is a vertical axial section of my centrifugal pump. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section showing in detail the front balancing chamber.
Similar numbers of reference indicate like parts.
1 is the cylindrical pump casing. 2 the eating with the suction pipe' 4. The rear head 5 has an annular chamber 6 communicating with the delivery passage 7. The casing and heads are horizontally divided in the usual way. On the shaft 7 are the impellers 9, 1D, 11 and 12, having the usual vanes 13. Surrounding each impeller is a diffuser formed of an annular plate 14 having lateral vanes 15 which venes carry a narrow ringY 1.6. 1n the diffuser ol: iinpellcr 1 said ringl is seated in a recess between the casing 1 and head 2.
casing and the internal partitions. In the dilusers of impellerslt) and 11 the annular plate 1l1is eircurnferentially flanged, and. said flange is received on a shoulder onl the periphery et the annular partitions 17. ln theditluser ol impeller 12, the plate 14 has a flange which rests on an inner partition wall the ringplate 14 and the other by a portion of the casing (head or partition as the case may bc) 'with the vanes extending in the usual way from wall to wall. Betwecnthe dii'luser of each impeller and the inlet of' the .next impeller in series is a passage formed by the partition 17, andA partition 19, said partitinns being connected by the guide vanos Specification of -Letters atent.
Application filed April 7, 1906. Serial No. 310,457.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908.
20, which may be cast integrally with them. The partition 19 is connected by a circu1nferential wall 21 to a parallel partition 22, which forms, already described, one wall ol' the dill'user associated with each of the impellers 10, 11, 12. The two partitions 19 and 22 with the circumferential vali 21 vmay be integral and secured tothe casing 1, by screw bolts 23. On the outer periphery ol wall 21 is a tongue 24, which fits into a groove in the casing. v
Between the front head 2 and the Iirst impcller 9 of the series, isformed a chamber Surrounding said chamber is a loose ring 26, seated in a recess in the head 2 vand having' flanges which alternate with similar' ilangeson the front side of the impeller 9. Another loose ring 27 forms an inner circumferential boundary of chamber 25 and is seated in said head 2, and provided with llanges which receive bctweenthem a flange on said impeller. The chamber 25 thus lies between the rings 26 and 27. Between each of the partitions 19 and the successive impellers are flanged rings 28, similar to ring 27 these rings forming the joint between the impeller and the adjacent partition19.
Between the last impeller 12 and the rear head 5 is a chamber 29 surrounded by a loose ring 30, which is seated in the head wall 18' and has two flanges which receive between them a flange on the impeller 12. The inner circumferential periphery of chainber 29 is formed by an enlargement 31 of a bushing 32 'which extends over a shouldcr on the hub of impeller 12 and over a ixcd collar 33 onfhaft 8, against which collar said hub abuts: The bushing 32 extends through a bearing in the head 5 and is received in a packing gland 34. Gutside of the ring and between the impeller 12 and wall 1S is a clearance space 35. The chamber 29 communicates with the front chamber 25 by means of a pipe 36, in which is a valve 37.
The hub of impeller 9 has a sleeve rojection 3B which is seated in a recess in t ie hub of impeller 10, and-the hub of iinpeller 10 is seated in that of impeller 11, and the hub Ao" impeller 11 in that of impeller 12. ln this way' tight joints between the hubs are formed and the shaft protected from 'corrosion. The front end of the hub of imneller 9 bears against two half' rings 39 whic are placed in a groove on shaft S. Adjacent to shoulder in the hub of. impeller 9. Said bushing .42 extends through a bearing in the head 2 and is received in a packing gland 43.
In the u per part of the casing are openings' 44, whic serve to admit priming liquid to the several impellers. Several openings 45 serve to drain liquid from the apparatus when it is at rest. All of these openings may be internally threaded as shown to receive screw closing )lugs The object oft e chambers 25, 29 and connecting pipe 36 is to balance the liquid pressure. on the faces of the impellers 9 and 12 at the ends of the series. 'lhe pressure areas on the said impeller faces may be directly proportioned with res )ect to thc relative pressures exerted on tfiem, or, .preferably, approximately proportioned and an impeller outlet as herein described.
adjustment of relative, pressures effected by means of the valve 37. The pressure exerted on op osite faces ol' the end impellers tends tov 'orce the hubs together, thus pre-i venting leakage at the joints. Some leakage from chamber 25 into the chamber 3 and from chamber 2S) into the adjacent stulling box is lof course unavoidable; but the liruid so escaping from chamber 25 is replm-,edl by liquid from chamber 2) received through vthe pipe or transfer duct 36 whereby the pressure in chamber 29 is maintained at a lower pressure than in the clearance space 35 and at the same pressure or nearly the same pressure (depending upon the adjustment .of the valve 37) as the pressure in chamber 25 and -from this more or less coinlplete equalization of pressure in these two c ambers, the balancingaction, which is the purpose of transfer duct 86, results. As the chamber 29 contains liquid under a pressure above that of the atmosphere the eni trance of air to the pump around the shaft journal at the delivery end is thus prevented. Such leakage as passes from said chami ber to the shaft journal assists in lubrication.
In another application for Letters Patent Serial No. 310,456, filed simultaneously herewith, I have described and claimed the construction of an annular chamber embodying two loose concentric rings seated between the front side of the impeller andthe casing wall, and also the construction of the di`user formed by a substantially flat ring provided with Vanes and a second ring vand seated in the annular passage beyond the I have also described and claimed in said application, the construction of the shaft journals substantially as herein shown and described. Said constructions are therefore not herein claimed.
