4550. Newton, P. A., [Worthington, H. R.]. Feb. 24. Balancing.-Relates to devicesfor balancing endthrust in centrifugal pumps and blowers and in turbines. The impeller is so constructed that a constant thrust exists in one direction, and this thrust is balanced by the pressure of fluid from an outside source. The Figure shows an impeller D arranged in a casing A, so that the side chambers 13, 13' are of different radial dimensions. This causes a constant axial thrust in one direction, and this thrust is balanced by the pressure of fluid led by the valve-controlled pipe 19 to a chamber 15 at the rear of the impeller. The fluid leaks past the collar 14 to holes 16 leading into the impeller.
