Abstract
8855. Hopkinson. E., and Chorlton, A. E. L. April 18. Centrifugal pumps.-Relates to centrifugal pumps of the kind described in Specification No. 13,578, A.D. 1894, and applicable as engines or fans. A number of wheels g, Figs. 1 and 2, having curved vanes n, are mounted on a shaft m. Guidepassages k are formed in the end walls o and partitions a, so that the water has an unchecked flow to the outlet O. End pressure on the shaft is partly or wholly balanced by admitting the outlet pressure through a pipe v to a chamb3r containing a balance piston r. Only one pump wheel g, Fig. 5, may be used, and its shaft m is fitted with a stuffing-box substitute consisting of a collar w, which is pressed against a flange z on the end of the bearing by the unbalanced portion of the end pressure.
