Abstract

20,554. Potter, J. C. May 11, [Convention date]. Carding-engines.-The m a i n cylinder, the licker-in, the doffer, and the revolving flats are all driven by a single open belt 30, Fig. 1, which does not pass more than once around any one of the pulleys that drive the various parts. The pulley 25 is loose on the doffer shaft, and, during carding, the doffer is driven through toothed change-gearing from the shaft of the pulley 27. The doffer comb 38 is driven by toothed gearing from the doffer shaft 26, so that any change in the speed of the doffer is accompanied in a fixed relation by a change in the rate of vibration of the comb. The feed rolls 29 are driven by a side shaft and bevelgearing from the doffer shaft. The revolving flats 16 are driven from the pulley 24 through a reversible connexion comprising two trains of gearing 60, 61, 62, Fig. 4, and 60, 62. The pinion 62 has two portions of different diameters, and the pinion 60 is mounted on a sliding spindle 63, and is moved into engagement with the pinion 61, or the pinion 62, as desired. During grinding, the belt to the main cylinder is crossed, the pulley 26 is secured to the doffer shaft, the train of gearing from the shaft of the pulley 27 being thrown out of gear, and the drive to the flats is reversed. The doffer comb may be provided with a pulley and he driven by the belt 30.
