Abstract

18,079. Millspaugh, W. H. Aug. 9. Wet presses and couch rolls. - In a papermachine of the type described in Specification 7042/10, in which the usual couch rolls and flat suction boxes are eliminated, and a suction roll is used, the web is taken from the forming-wire 1 by hand, or broken off by a blast-pipe within the suction roll, and is deposited on the first felt 3, by which it is carried between a soft press roll 7, preferably of rubber, and a suction roll 6, the suction area 6<a> of which extends on both sides of the bite of the rolls, to prevent the sheet from clinging to the roll 7. From the felt 3, the web passes round a suction roll 10, the suction area 10<a> extending on both sides of the bite, while the suction area 10<b> acts on one side of the bite, thus enabling the web to be picked up by the soft roll 11 and carried to the driers 13. An additional roll 12 of rubber, stone, wood, or composition may also be used, the rolls 11, 12 together smoothing out the impressions of the felts. Any number of suction rolls coacting with squeeze-rolls may be used. The squeeze-rolls may be moistened, and the usual doctors may be provided. Any suitable suction roll may be used, but the roll described in Specification 16,184/08, in combination with the rotary pump described in Specification 7042/10, is preferred. The arrangement may be applied to ordinary Fourdrinier or other types of paper-machines.
