Abstract

17,498. Hilton, R. C., and Brown, C. F. Aug. 1. Overlap joints with screwed spigot.-Relates to screw couplings for hose-pipes &c. of the type in which the female member has radially-moving blocks with screw-threaded internal faces, so that the screw-threaded spigot is coupled by pushing it into the socket, and is tightened by a partial turn. A cam-ring is provided to lock the blocks against movement during turning to couple or uncouple. The device is described as for attachment to a screw-threaded female coupling of ordinary form. Blocks 8, with threaded inner faces, are slidably mounted in inclined recesses in a socket member 6, and are pressed inwards by a spring 10 embracing the blocks. A ring 11, rotatably held on the member 6 by a locking-ring 16, has cam surfaces 12, 13, the latter formed with a shoulder 14 adapted to engage behind the blocks 8 and prevent their outward movement when the ring 11 is turned in either direction. The blocks are thus held in engagement with the threaded spigot 2 during the tightening turn on coupling, and during uncoupling. The member 6 is screwed into the female coupling 4. An inner flanged sleeve 18 is provided. When the parts are coupled, the flange 19 bears against a gasket 21, and the flange 20 against the end of the spigot 2.
