Description

UNITED STATES Patented March 22,1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
HOSE-CQUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,325, dated March 22, 1904.
Application filed October 9,1902.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it'known' that I, GEORGE SoU'rAR, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at East Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose- Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying. drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pipe-couplings, the object of the invention being to provide novel means whereby two sections of pipe may be securely coupled together and coupled in such a manner that when desired the same may be easily and quickly uncoupled.
Briefly described, my invention comprises the enlarging of the bore in one of the pipesections to receive the end of the other pipesection therein, the latter pipe-section being increased in diameter and fitting neatly within the first-statedpipe-section; The firstmentioned enlarged pipe-section is provided at opposite sides of its periphery with cylinders or casings, and in these is arranged a locking device embodying a shank carryinga catch or dog on its inner end, which operates through the enlarged portion of the pipe-section and engages in a notch provided therefor in the periphery of the inner pipe-section. The stem is provided at its outer end with a suitable knob or button, and arranged within the cylinder or casing between the closed ends thereof and the-dog or catch is a spring which normally holds the said dog or catch in engagement with the inner section. All of this construction will be hereinafter more specifically described in detail and then particularly pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification and which represents a central longitudinal sectional view of a pipe-coupling constructed in accordance with my invention.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 indicates the female section, and 2 the male section, of the coupler, the former being provided with an enlarged portion or end 3 and the latter Serial No. 126,548. (No model.)
having a. portion 4, which fits within the enlarged portion 3 of increased exterior diameter. The central bore 5 through the pipes is of the same diameter throughout when the coupler is connected together, and the en larged portion 4 of the section 2 is provided at a point adjacent to its inner end with a circumferential groove in which is arranged a suitable packing 6. The inner end of the portion 4 of the pipe-section 2 isbeveled, and this beveled end fits tightly against the packing or gasket 7, which is arranged in a seat provided therefor in the beveled face 8 of the pipe-section 1. On opposite sides of its periphery the enlarged portion 3 of the pipe-section 1 is provided with outwardly-extending cylinders or casings 9, closed at their outer ends by means of caps 10 and washers 11, the latter fitted neatly into the ends of the casings or cylinders.
These washers and caps 10 are apertured to receive the stem 12, provided on its outer end with a head or button 14 and at its inner end carrying a catch or dog 15, which operates through the portion 3 and engages in the notch 16, provided therefor in the periphery of the enlarged portion 4 of the section 2. This dog or catch is constructed with a beveled face at one side and a straight face at the other, as shown in the drawings, and the notches are similarly constructed in order that the section 2 may be forced into the portion 3, and as the end of the portion 4 engages the inclined face of the dog or catch the latter will be forced back until the notches 16 are reached, when the springs 17 which are arranged within the casing or cylinder between the closed outer end thereof and the dog or catch 15, will force the said dog or catch into the notches 16 and lock the two sections together. The enlarged portion 4 at its inner end forms, in conjunction with the outer end of flared portion .3, with which it lies flush, a shoulder against which the hose abuts, the latter thereby acting as a washer and closing the joint formed between portions 3 and 4. When it is desired to un'couple the sections, the dogs or catches are thrown out of engagement with the section 4, and the latter may be readily withdrawn from the portion 3. The packing or gaskets 6 and 7 serve to form an absolutely tight joint to prevent liquid passing around the exterior of the portion f of the section 2.
A coupler of this construction may be used in various instances where it is desired to couple two sections of hose together in a manner that they may be easily and quickly uncoupled when desired, though it is particularly adapted and devised to be used mainly on firehose and all such hose requiring easy and instantaneous coupling, and in the practice of the invention it will be noted that various slight changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hose-coupling comprising male and female members, said male member having one of its ends exteriorly enlarged for a considerable portion of its length, said female member having its end offset to entirely receive said enlarged portion of the male member and to permit the bores of said members to be continuous and uninterrupted, the inner end of said male enlarged portion and the outer end of the female oflset portion being flush with each other and being for engagement with the hose whereby the latter will close the joint formed between said portions. said male member at its extremity being inclined, and said female member at the inner end of its offset portion being correspondingly formed to receive said inclined end of the male member, a gasket seating against said female inclined portion and on the bottom of the offset portion thereof, a gasket carried in a depressed portion of the male member, the opposite end of the male member being inclined outwardly and the opposite end of the female member being flared outwardly to receive said last-named end of the male member, and means for securing said members against movement. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
