HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters -Patent No. 290,663, dated December 25, 1883.
Application filed July 31, 1883. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DENNIS S. BLUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved coupling, and Fig. 2 a perspective View of the sections in I 5 position ready for coupling.
The present invention has relation to that class of hose or pipe coupling in which are employed two coupling-sections, one of said sections having exterior screw-threads eX- tending partially around its periphery in such manner as to leave alternate plain surfaces and screwthreaded surfaces to engage with similarly-formed plain and screw-threaded surfaces upon the interior of the opposite coupling-section, whereby the two sections are firmly held together when the screw-threads thereon register with each other, but will admit of their being uncoupled and separated when the screw-threaded surfaces are brought opposite and in line with the plain surfaces upon the respective sections.
The invention further relates to that class of hose-couplings in which one of the coupling-sections is provided with a spring-catch 3 5 adapted to engage with ratchetteeth upon the inner edge of the opposite section to hold the two together.
The object of the invention is to improve the construction ofthe above1nentioned class 4o of hose or pipe couplings; and it consists in the several details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, A B represent the two sections of my coupling, each provided with a Spanner-pin, a, formed with and projecting from their annularly-shouldered portions b, the hose, pipes, or other like articles to be coupled being secured to that portion of the sections marked c. rlhe annular shoulder of 5o the section B has a recessed projection, d, in which is secured a spring bolt or catch, e, adapted to engage with a depression or depressions, f, in the face ofthe section Awhen said sections are coupled. This section A is provided upon its interior front portion with suitable threads arranged opposite each other, with blank spaces between, said threads and spaces being each equal to one-fourth the entire inner circumference of this front portion of said section. Threads and spaces are similarly upon the outer front portion of the section B, and so arranged that when the two sections are joined together the threads of one will occupy the blank spaces ofl the other, the spanner-pins a of both sections registering on the same line when said sections are thus joined, thereby acting as a guide to the operator, as, unless these spanner-pins register on the same line, as stated, the sections will not 7o join. Vhen the two sections are thus engaged and a one-eighth turn made, the threads enga-ge each other, and by a quarter-turn the joint is formed, the spring bolt or catch e of the section B automatically entering the depression f in section A, thereby locking the two together, and preventing their turning back and coming uncoupled. A quarterturn being all that is necessary to tightly form the coupling, the usual sleeve or swivel is dispensed with, which renders the sections cheaper of manufacture and less complicated in their operation.
To uncouple the sections, it is only necessary to push back the spring bolt or catch and turn back on the coupling until the spannerpins register or come upon the same line, when said sections may be easily drawn apart as the` threads of each occupy the blank spaces of the other.
Having nowV fully described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a coupling for hose or other like tub ing, the combination of two coupling-sections, one of which has depressions upon its edge,
and the other section cast with a recessed lIn testimony that I claim the above I have projection extending radially from its periphhereunto subscribed my name in the presence ery, and zu spring bolt or catch located thereoi' two Witnesses.
