Abstract
17,131. Armstrong, Whitworth, & Co., Sir W. G., and Murray, C. H. July 26. Loading-appliances.-Relates to hoists, and to loading-trays acting in conjunction therewith, for conveying projectiles into the loading position behind the gun. According to the invention (1) the projectile cage b of the hoist, shown in end elevation in Fig. 2, is connected by a rope c to a counterweight e. The cage is operated by hauling the counterweight up and down by hand by an endless rope f. (2) The loading-tray h is so constructed that it receives the projectile from the cage in the following manner. The tray h is hinged upon an horizontal axis i, which is vertically pivoted at j to the usual radial arm k, and is in the form of a slotted plate as shown in plan in Fig. 3. When the cage b rises, the plate h is tilted by the projectile into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and allows the cage to pass above the tray. The cage, which is not in itself a feature of novelty, is then lowered and, being suitably constructed for the purpose, passes through the slotted plate h, while the projectile is retained by the plate.
