Description

M. MOINTYRB.
LOADING APPARATUS. APPLICATION nun JULY 1,1911.
Patented Nov. 28
INVENTOR 71mm W 4;, ATTORNEYS UNITED STA'lES PATENT OFFICE.
MALCOLM MOINTYRE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOADING APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MALCOLM MUINTYRE, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Loading Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My inventlon relates to loading apparatus and particularly to loading apparatus designed for loadmg ships with coal, the special object of my invention being to provide a simple self-contained apparatus which can as a unit be readily attached to, and detached from, sh ns sides.
In the acconi tying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention, and mounted in operative position; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a diagram illustrating another method of mounting.
In the form illustrated the present apparatus comprises a supporting frame 5, the Side members of which are brought together at the upper end, to which is secured a ccntral hook (l. The latter projects rearwardly and affords vertically adjustable means by i which the frame may be suspended from the rail 7 or like support at the side of a vessel 8, in proper relation to the coal port 9. An eye 10 may be provided at the top of the frame to receive a suspension rope from a derrick by which the frame is swung into position on the side of the ship.
On the lower portion of th s frame I have mounted hoisting devices which are preferably electrically operated. When so operated the motors 12 may be energized from the generators commonly found on modern ships, by simply plugging in the conductors 13 into, a receptac e 14, conv niently placed on the ship, preferably adjacent the coal port 9, as illustrated.
The hoisting tackle and rigging may be of any desired character. For convenience of illustration and efficiency of operation, I have illustrated a digging bucket 15, suspended on the hoisting cable 16, passing over the sheave 17, at the end of the lifting split boom 18 thence over the head sheave 19 to the hoisting drum 20. The cable 21 which controls the opening and closing of the bucket 15 is secured to the usual bucket wheel 22 and passes thence past the guide pulley 23 over the guide sheaves 24-25 to Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed July 1, 1911.
Patented Nov. 28, 1911. Serial No. 636.429.
the bucket operating drum 20 which is rotated in harmony with the drum 20 for the hoisting cable 16. The split boom 18 is pivoted upon the frame at 27 and is swung by the cable 28. The latter is wound on the ditlercntial drum 29 and passes over the head sheaves 3()-- 31, on the frame, the sheave 32 at the cud of the boom being engaged in a big-ht in the cable. This cable is so arranged upon the dill'crcntial drum which is operated in unison with the hoisting drum that the boom is swung in at a predetermined time and speed so as to make the bucket follow a predetermined path indicated by the dotted lines. The hopper 33 supported by brackets on the frame is constricted at its lower end, opening into a discharge chute 34 adapted to enter the port 9 in the side of the ship. A platform 35 is provided for an operator who may operate the controller levers so by which the motors for the digging, hoisting, and opening and lowering of the bucket are controlled.
If desired the frame may be provided with a bottom fork 37, as illustrated in Fig. :l, which is adapted to straddle the side rail :38 of the ship, a guy rope 39 attached to the upper eye being stretched to the ships deck to hold the frame in position. This construction is adapted for use on ships provided with deck hatches for coaling, the transfer car 40 receiving the discharge from the chute mounted on the hoisting frame. In other respects the apparatus diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 3 is tin. as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Various modifications of structure in which my invention is embodied will readily suggest themselves.
1 claim as my invention 1. A self-contained loading readily attachable to and detachable from ships as a unit, coln].)rising a supporting frame and means for mounting the same temporarily upon the side of a vessel, in combination with a boom, digging bucket hoisting drum, motor and hoisting tackle all carried by said frame, for the purpose described.
2. A self-contained loading appa 'atus readily attachable to and detachable from ships as a unit, romprising a supporting frame and means for mounting the same temporarily upon the side of a vessel, in combination with a bo m, discharge chute, digging bucket hoisting drum, motor and apparatus,
hoisting tackle all carried by said frame, for the purpose described.
55. A self-contained loading apparatus readily attachable to and detat'hable from ships as a unit, eoinpi'isii'ig a supporting t'i'aine and means For mounting the same temporarilv upon the side of a vessel in (-olnbiuation with boonu hoisting drum. dig:- *jin; lau-ket hoisting drum. motor and hoi tin; taeld all lillllCtl by said traine for the purpoiw deseribed.
l selt-eontained loading apparatua readily attaehable to and detaebable from ships as a unit, comprising a supportil'ig frame and means for n'u-unting the same temporarily upon the side of a vessel. in ('ombination with a boom, digging: bneliel hoisting! drum. motor and hoisting taekle all l-sn'iied by said i'l'anatogether with means for controlling the position of Filltl boom, subs-(ant ially as desri'ibed.
5. i\ HJlLVHlllillIlLitl loading appafiatus readily flllilkllillllk? to and detaehable from ships as a unit, con'iprising a supporting frame and means for mounting the same temporarily upon the side of a vessel, in ombination with a boom, digging bucket.
hoisting drum, motor and hoisting tackle all carried by Said frame, together with a dif- 'fei'ential drum earried by said frame and opel'atitely count-vied to said boom to eontrol the position of the latter, substantially an described.
3. Ht'lf,-(' llll;tllltil loadiiu, apparatus readily attaehable to and detachable from ships a a unit eomprising a supporting Iralne and means for mounting the same temporarily upon the side of a vessel, in I'Hlllllllltttl'tjl with a boom, drum eontrelting the angular pmition of the latter, a digging lilHlttt. hoisting tackle therefor, a hoisting drum for operating said tackle, said hoistingand boom drums being operated in unison and all of said dexiees being earned by tlae frame, substantially as: and for the urpose described.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to thia spec-ifivatiei'i, in the presence 01" two Sltl'lbClllJlllQ witnesses;
M ALCOLM M cINl YRE.
