A bucket or shovel 151 is carried on the end of an extensible arm 5 which is supported at the lower end of an extensible member 1 depending through the hatchway and can swing in a vertical plane, whilst the member 1 can be turned about its own axis. As shown, the upper section 4 of the member 1 is secured to a turntable 7 on a truck 14 movable. transversely on a truck 17 which spans the hatchway and moves fore and aft on rails 19. The members 5 and 1 can be telescoped and withdrawn through the hatchway so that the truck 17 may be moved from one hatch to another or to another vessel. The sections of the member 1 are allowed to descend bv their own weight, and they are supported from the turntable 7 and retracted in the bights of hoisting ropes 20 wound on drums 21 driven by a motor 32 on the turntable. The turntable carries a second motor 40 for rotating it. The extensible arm 5, Fig. 7, is pivoted on a shaft 48 carried by the lowest-section 2 of the vertical extensible member 1. The arm is swung vertically on the shaft 48 by means of a pinion, not shown, engaging a toothed sector 49 on the arm, the pinion being driven by a motor carried on the section 2. The swinging movement is limited by hooks 50<1> on the sector engaging the shaft of the driving pinion. The arm 5 is in four sections 65 - - 68 and is retracted by shortening the bight 77 of a cable 70 wound on the drum 72. The sec. tions are extended by winding the cables 71 on the drum 73. The cables 71 are connected with the section 66 at 79 and move it outwards; the movement of a pulley 82 carried by this section in the bight of an anchored cable 80 moves the next section 67 outwards, and the outer section 68 is moved similarly by means of an anchored' cable 84. The drums 72, 73 are actuated by a motor on the section 2 through gearing including a pinion loose on the shaft 48, and a foot brake is provided for controlling the movement. The sections 66 - - 68 engage with one another by means of rollers, not shown. The bucket or shovel 6 is adjustable on the pivot 151 and is secured in position by a pin passed through one of the holes 152. The truck 14 is traversed by a motor 170 thereon, and the truck 17 also carriesa propelling motor.
