Abstract

4181. Dawson, A. T., and Horne, J. Feb. 21. Loading-appliances.- A trunk attached to an ordnance turntable is provided with hoists for conveying shell and powder charges separately to the gun platform. In a double gun mounting, the shells are delivered between the guns, and the powder is delivered on the outer sides of the guns. The shells are raised by a cage or cages D, Fig. 1, lifted by means of wire ropes along guides in the central portion of the trunk C. The shells are supplied to the cages D from inclined trays at the bottom of the trunk by releasing stops of the trays, and are allowed to slide, when the cages D arrive at their highest position, across fixed or pivoted inclined trays G to loading-cages H by releasing stops d, g on the cages D and the trays G respectively, the trays G being sometimes tilted by hand or automatically. The cages H are raised along rails h arranged concentrically with the trunnions, and the pivoted trays h<1> on the cages H are tilted by levers thereon striking against cams or the like on the gun cradle, so as to discharge the shells to radial loading-trays I similar, in some cases, to those described in Specification No. 9417, A.D. 1899. Compensating-gear, such as that described in Specification No. 9415, A.D. 1899, may be provided, so that the relative positions of the trays I and cages H shall remain unaltered while the shells are being tilted. The powder hoists may consist of vertical double buckets suspended between endless chains, or of cages having double compartments and running on rails. In a single gun mounting, the powder and shell are delivered at opposite sides of the gun.
