Abstract

Decanting.-A baffle C, Fig. 1, is provided to cause a surface distribution of liquid in apparatus of a known type for separating liquids of different densities, such as oil and water. In this type of apparatus, the liquid mixture is supplied to a central compartment A through a pipe B, the water passes under a diaphragm D into a compartment D<1> and overflows a partition E to an outlet F, and the oil collects on the surface and passes through one or more outlets G into a compartment J, from which it may be withdrawn through a tap J' or exhaust. suction pipe K. Impurities are removed from the oil by a gauze sieve or filter L. Taps M, M<1> are provided for cleansing purposes. A modification is described, in which the compartment J extends beneath the compartment A. Fig. 3 is a plan of a further modification, having the compartment D' at the end of the compartment A.
