Filters and strainers having sheet filtering or straining materials. - Apparatus for filtering or straining petrol or a similar liquid, and for separating any small quantities of water or other heavy liquid that it may contain, before it enters the carburettor of an internal-combustion engine, comprises a chamber containing two strainers and a funnel through which the liquids pass to a sump at the bottom of the chamber, in which sump the water and other heavy impurities are separated out. The funnel 2 rests on a shoulder 4 and is provided with a projecting pin or stud 3 to facilitate removal. The lower strainer consists of a tube 5 having a bottom of fine wire gauze 7 or similar material, the gauze being stretched by forcing a ring 8 into the tube. The upper strainer consists of a cone of wire gauze or similar material clamped between two rings 10, 11 resting on a shoulder 13 and the top of the tube 5. The rings 10, 11 are held down by a spring 17 fastened to the screw cap 14. A projecting pin 6 and a cross-bar 12 are provided in the lower and upper strainers, respectively, to facilitate removal. The inlet opening 19<A> is between the rings 10, 11 and the cap 14. It is enlarged at 19, the enlarged part being screwed internally to receive a tap. The outlet union 20 is screwed into the side of the chamber 1 just below the shoulder 4, the outlet passage being right-angled as shown. A drain tap is screwed into an opening 22 at the bottom of the sump 1<@>.
