Filters; decanting. - The apparatus for filtering oil and separating it from water comprises three parts, a chamber 2 in which solid matters settle, and from which the oil overflows through one or more perforated cylinders 6, a chamber 1 in which filtering-material is held between perforated plates 7, 8, and a chamber 13 which forms a receiver for the filtered oil, and has a compartment in which water is separated from the oil by decantation. The mixed oil and water from the filter enter the passage 17, and the oil overflows into the main part of the chamber 13 through a vertical glass tube situated outside of the apparatus and serving to indicate the amount of oil in the receiver. The water passes under a partition 16 and overflows through an adjustable stand-pipe 24. The cylinders 6 may be filled with cotton-waste or other filtering-medium.
