Abstract

403,849. Filters ; purifying liquids. SANTIAGO, M. S., Industrial Site 26, Eloff Street Extension, Johannesburg, South Africa. April 18, 1933, No. 11315. [Class 46.] A filter is formed of a number of spaced cells containing sponges tightly packed together. Fig. 4 shows an upwardflow filter 23 with three cells, each cell comprising a frame 24 with internal flanges 25, 26, recessed to receive perforated plates 30, 28, between which the sponges are compressed. The frames have spigots 37 and sockets 38 which make joint between adjacent frames when the cells are held together by bolts 43. Fig. 1 shows the application of a filter 23' as described for the treatment of liquid leaving the last compartment 4 of a settling tank comprising compartments 1-4, to which a mixture of liquid and solid is supplied from a tank 21. The filtered liquid is discharged by a launder 48. A filter arranged for downward filtration is shown in Fig. 6. The liquid is supplied to the top cell by a launder 57. The filtrate passes from a space 50 below the bottom cell to a launder 53. Excess liquid delivered to a cell but not filtered therethrough passes away through spouts 58, 59, 60.
