[Classes 46 and 111] Plant for purifying water, sewage, &c. comprises a preliminary settling chamber 10, a coagulation chamber 11 and a filter 12 arranged one within another. There may be a central chamber 14 for pipe connections, and an outer reservoir 13 for the purified liquid. A diametrical partition P divides the tanks into two portions which may be operated independently. Liquid for treatment is delivered by a main 16 to the tanks 10, which are fitted with baffles 18. After flowing round these tanks it passes through pipes 19 to the coagulating tanks, chemical agents being added at this point. From the coagulating tanks the liquid passes through pipes 22 to a distributer 23 in the chamber 14 which distributer has branches leading to wells corresponding to sections into which each of the filters is divided by radial partitions. The liquid is distributed from each well over the corresponding filter section by radial troughs 34. Filtered liquid passes through pipes 35 to a stand pipe 36<1> in the chamber 14 and thence through mains 37 to the reservoir 13. For cleaning the filter sections wash water is passed from a distributing head 44 in the chamber 14 through. pipes 45 to the spaces beneath the filtering medium and passes upward through the medium, impurities being flushed into the wells which have connections to waste. Screens for supporting the filtering medium are formed of radial bars. Modified apparatus is described in which the coagulating tank is inside the filter and the preliminary settling-tank inside the coagulating tank, the troughs 34 which distribute liquid over the filters being arcuate instead of radial.
