Producers.-In a gas-producer, an annular retort or fixing-chamber i is placed within the producer with its inlet at the incandescent zone so that all the gas generated passes first through the incandescent fuel and then through the retort. Fuel can pass through the centre of the retort and between the retort and the producer wall. A pipe or pipes o may be provided for re-introducing at the bottom gases taken from the top of the producer, which gases pass with the rest through an annular space j in the retort to an outlet k. By this means the heavy gases are fixed and the tarry matters are prevented from passing away from the producer. Air and steam are supplied through the tuyere d and a pipe q is provided at the upper part of, the producer, for taking off gas for raising steam in the boiler used for the producer steamsupply.
