Gas-producers.-A vessel or retort is arranged in connection with a producer, the gas from the producer being passed through the vessel or retort, and enriched by means of incandescent coke or carbon contained therein. In one form of the apparatus, shown in Fig. 1, the vessel or retort is a vertical pipe p situated within, and concentric to, the producer b, which has firebars f rest. ing at one end on a ring g, and at the other end on a flange h formed on the upper end of a pipe k, forming a continuation of the pipe p. A pipe n, which may be provided with a removable cover 10, may be bolted to the pipe k, and is connected to a pipe y for conducting away the enriched gas. A pipe q is secured to the plate c, covering the producer, and bangs concentrically within the enlarged upper end of the pipe p; the pipe q is provided with a charging and cleaning door 9. The producer is charged with coal from casings v past cones t, and coal is prevented from falling into the annular space between the pipes p, q by a guard or pipe s having a lower flared part x. Steam may be admitted to the producer through a pipe z, or hollow firebars, connected to a pipe 2. In a modification, the vessel or retort is a vertical, inclined, or horizontal pipe supported within and, heated by means of, a separate fireplace.
