Abstract

9635. Spencer, A. April 20. Buffers. - Relates to buffer springs for railway and like vehicles of the kind in which the auxiliary spring surrounds the main spring and is compressed by the buffer head through a sleeve projecting through the buffer casing, the main spring being compressed by a collar on the buffer rod located within the sleeve. According to the invention the collar for compressing the main spring is located in front of, and acts upon the sleeve, the springs, casing, and sleeve being all located within the headstock. Fig. 1 shows the main spring a of concentric rubber ring type the inner end of which is surrounded by the auxiliary spring f which is enclosed in a casing k, through which protrudes a sleeve h integral with a compression ring m, against which the outer end of the auxiliary spring bears. The spring a is first compressed by a ring d on the buffer-rod b until the rod d engages with the outer end of the sleeve h whereupon the auxiliary spring is brought into operation. The rubber springs may be replaced by volute or helical springs. Specifications 9432/02 and 21,641/02 are referred to.
