Abstract

26,753. Watson, C. Nov. 17. Buffers; draw-gear.- The springs of a buffer or draw-gear are arranged so as to provide an increased range combined with a graduation of resistance. The two springs A, B, Fig. 1, are placed between ferrules F, G, and bear against the intermediate washers D, E, which have interpenetrating sleeve-portions, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. In operation, after the rod C has moved through a predetermined d i stance, one of the ferrules F, G bears against the sleeve portion of one of the washers D, E, and the rate of increase of resistance is doubled. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the central plate I is free between the stops K, L, thus presenting a further graduation of the resistance, the stages being (1) two springs in series, (2) one spring, (3) two springs in parallel; thus the increase of resistance is twice doubled.
