Buffers of the type in which two springs, one light and the other stiffer, or a series of springs are used, and in which the buffer head is integral with the spindle, are made so that the rate of increase of resistance of the heavier spring increases with the deflexion; and the springs are combined with a cup-shaped washer of known type mounted on the central spindle. The outer spring f is helical and the inner one h of volute form, but the latter spring may be replaced by Belleville washers, rubber springs, &c. A shoulder k on the spindle limits the compression of the outer spring by bearing upon the washer i. The washer i may be provided with an expansible friction device m, which is engaged by the washer a towards the end of the stroke and expanded against the buffer guide so as to dissipate some of the energy of impact of the heavier shocks.
