Abstract

15,113. Turner, H. C. June 28. Vibration-dampers ; connexions, attachments, and adjustments applicable generally for tensile and compressive springs. -Relates to shock-absorbers for motor-cars and other vehicles of the type comprising friction disks provided with ratchet mechanism so as to be free in one direction. According to the present invention, a casing 15 fixed to the vehicle frame 10 is formed with a boss 16 carrying a stud 18, on which is mounted a sleeve 19 formed with an arm 20. Another arm 21 is fixed at right-angles to the arm 20 and is also connected by a ball joint 22 to an adjustable rod 23, which is attached at its lower end by another ball joint 24 to an axle clip 25 to which the bearing- spring 11 is secured. A sleeve 28 is mounted to rotate on the boss 16, and is connected by keys and keyways both to the sleeve 19 and to a ratchetwheel 32. The wheel 32 is engaged by a number of pawls 33, which are arranged as shown in Fig 3 and are mounted in a recessea member 35, provided with a cover-plate 44 and adapted to rotate in the casing 15. Friction disks 39, 40 and 48, 50 are arranged on opposite sides of the member 35 ; the disks 39, 50 are connected by lugs and keyways to the casing 15, while the disks 40, 48 are similarly connected to the member 35. A plate 52 is provided with lugs engaging keyways in the casing 15, and is pressed against the friction members by an annular spring 55, which is in the shape of a conical frustum and bears against an adjustable screw cover 56. The casing 15 is filled with lubricant, preferably of a semi-liquid consistency, a stuffing-box 57 being provided to prevent leakage.
