[Class 108 (iii).] Frictional vibration dampers for vehicles employing deformable shoes, as described in Specification 333,841, [Class 108 (iii), Springs &c.], are constructed with two such units held at one extremity in a distance piece and free at the other end, the two units being expanded by cam mechanism into engagement with a drum by a connection under the control of the driver. The two deformable units, Fig. 1, each consisting of an undulated steel spring 5 embedded in rubber and faced with frictional material 2, are each secured by pins 11 to an anchoring member 12, their other ends being free so that each unit resists movement of the drum in one direction only. The two units are expanded by a double cam 7 which is rotated through a spring 10 by the squared shaft 9. This shaft extends outside the casing and carries an arm 24, Fig. 4, connected by a wire 26 and rocking lever 28 to the inner connection of a Bowden mechanism 29, the other end of which is operated through worm gearing 33, 34, Fig. 7, adjustable by a small wheel 31. The arm 24 may be adjusted angularly on the square shaft 9. Two such groups may be associated in one casing. The cams 7 may be replaced by an elastic mass exerting a constant pressure on the shoes.
