Patented May 14, 1907.

.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GUs'rAvE L. Hsnz, a subject of the Crown of Austria, and a resident of the boron h of Brooklyn, in the city and State of New ork, have inventeda new and useful Anti'vbration Device, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device for use in connection with vehicles whereby the vehicle spring may be permitted to be compressed under one degree of friction and permitted to ex and under another degree of friction there y preventing undue vibration of the vehicle body when the vehicle wheels are subjected to severejolts.
A further object is to provide certain iinprovcnients in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts whereby a de-V the device, F 3 is a transverse central sec tion throught e device on an enlarged scale, F1 4 is a side viewY of the device, 'g'. 5 is a si e view with certain of the parte removed,
and Fig. 6 is a detail section of the lost inoV tion connection between the body and axle.
A hollow casing of cylindrical form is denoted by 1 and it is provided with a centrally arranged hollow axle 2 and a removable cover 3. I
A wheel 4 has its hub 5 mounted on the Q' axle 2 ,i which hub is provided on its end 6 ex- 4S terior to the cover 3 of the casing with'an arm 7, the free end of which is connected to the axle 8 as follows :-'A cylinder 9 is provided with a ling lior the ipurpose of hinging the cylinderto the free en ofthe arm 7 by means of a ivot bolt 11. This cylinder 9 is pro vide with a screw cap 12; A rod 13 is hinged at 14 to a bracket 15 fixed to the axle 8 in the present instance by4 be' clipped thereto on to 'of the sp 16. e upper end of this ro 13 extends t on h the cap 12 of the cylinder 9 and is provide with a head .the means for obtainin Y herein shown as the well i brake.
'13 of the vc 17 fitted to slide in the bore of the said cylinder. Upper and lower cushions 18, 19, are located within the cylinder 9 in position to engage the head 17 of the rod 13 after it has Vmoved a slight distance in either direction,
which cushions may be made of rubber or other suitable material. A lost motion connection is thus made between thearm 7 of the Wheel 5 and the axle 8. This wheel is held in osition on the axle 2 by providing an annular interior shoulder 20 in the hub 5 and reducing the end of the axle 2, as shown at 21. A retaining plate 22 is held in position overlapping the shoulder 20 by means of a screw 23. Y y
The arm 7 is clam d ainst movement on the extension 6 of t e hu 5 b providing a bolt 24 having a screw threade engagement with the bore of the extension 6, a washer 25 being interposed between the Vhead of the bolt 24 and the outer face of the arm 7.
A second wheel 26 is mounted concentric to the wheel fl and is arranged to be clutched thereto when the wheel 4 is moved in one direction and released therefrom when K, the wheel 4 is moved in the op osito direction,
t result being own roller clutch, the wheel 4 forming the inner member and the wheel 26 forming the outer member of the clutch, rollers 27 bein interposed between te two members for c utchingY and releasing t em! Y A band lbrake 28 surrounds the wheel 4J and issnpp'orted by the casing 1 at a oint intermediate its ends by a screw bo t 29 which eng esa boss 30 on the said brake.
VThe free en s of the brake 28 are independently adjusted toward each other for regu latin the amount of friction on the periphery o the wheel by means of set screws 31,
32, having lock mits 33, A34, which set screws pass through a ln on the exterior of the casin 1. Arban brake 36 is similari provide for the friction WheelZ, the sai band i brake being su ported by the casing 1 intermediate its en by means of a screw bolt 37 which en ages'a boss 38 on the said band he ends of this band brake 36 are forced toward each other independently b means of ad'nsting bolts 39, 40,1 and loch nuts 41, 42, t e said bolts being 'mounted in the lug 35 of the casing 1.
The casinll is held stationary on the body fcle at any desired position.
the spring is compressed in operation, as
under the impulse of a sudden jolt, the irst part of the compression of the sprin is'unretarded owing to the lost motion in t e connection between the arm 7 and the axle 8. The further compression of the spring is retarded with the desired amount of friction under the influence of the band brakes 28 and 36 which exert their retarding inuence on the peri heries of the wheels 4 and 26 which are ocked `together by the clutch rollers 27. As the parts tend to return to their normal position, a less amount of re-I tarding friction. is imposed upon the spring 16 for the reason that the brake 28 only is utilized for exerting its retarding friction on the wheel 4, the wheel 26 being released from the wheel 4 by the clutch rollers 27. It will be seen that any desired amount of friction can be applied between the band brakes 28, 36, and their respective friction wheels 4, 26, so as to obtain the required result. It will, furthermore, be seen 4that any slight 'ars on the traction Wheels of the vehicle will i e unimpeded owing to the lost motion in 'the connection between the arm 7 and the axle 8 of the vehicle.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a Vehicle spring, of means Vfor retarding the compression and expansion ofthe spring comprising two parts arranged to be clutched to and released from each other and band brakes engaging said parts.
2. The combination with a vehicle spring, of means for retarding the compression and expansion of the spring comprising two parts arranged to be clutched to and released from each other, band brakes engaging said arts and means for adjusting the rictiona engagement of said brakes with said parts.
3, The combination with a vehicle spring, of means for retarding the compression of the spring with one degree of friction and the expansion of the spring with another degi'ee of friction com rising two parts arran ed to be clutched) to and released from eac other and band brakes engaging said parts.
4. The combination with a vehicle spring, of means for retarding the compression of the spring with one degree of friction and the expansion of the spring with another de ree of friction comprismg two arts arrange to be clutched to and releasedp from each other, band brakes en aging said arts and means for adjusting the frietiona engagement of said brakes with said parts.
5. The combination with a vehicle spring, of means for retarding the compression and expansion of the spring comprising a support, two parts concentrically mounted thereon, a roller clutch interposed between the parts and band brakes engaging said parts.
6. An anti-vibration device comprising a casing, two wheels rotatably mounted therein, a roller clutch interposed between said wheels and band brakes carried by said casing arranged to frictionally engage the peripheries of said wheels.
7. An anti-vibration device comprising a casing, two wheels rotatably mounted therein, a roller clutch interposed between said wheels, band brakes carrled b the easing for frictionally engaging the peripheries of said wheels and means for adjustin the frictional engagement of said brakes wit said wheels.
8. An anti-vibration device comprising a hollow casing, its axle, a wheel mounted on said axle, a second wheel mountedconcentric with the first named wheel, a roller clutch interposed between the two Wheels and band brakes carried by the casing for engag'ng the peripheries of said wheels.
9. An anti-vibration device comprising a hollow casing, its axle, a wheel mounted thereon, a second wheel mounted concentrically with the first-named wheel, a roller clutch interposed between the two wheels, band brakes carried by the casing in position to frictionally engage the peripheries of said wheels and means for adjusting the frictional engagement of said brakes with said whels.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this 2nd day of January 1907.
