Abstract

460. Sowden, C. N., and Wood, D. Jan. 7. Vibration-dampers.-Relates to frictional shock-absorbers particularly applicable to damping the vibrations of vehicle springs, and consists in providing, in connexion with relatively movable levers, a number of frictional units of progressively increasing diameter which are engaged in succession, the units having frictional contact with the surfaces of the levers and also between themselves. Fig. 2 shows disks 12<a>, 13a formed on a pair of arms 12, 13 which are carried by a pin projecting from the vehicle frame 10, and a disk 14<a> carried by an arm 14 pivotally attached to the vehicle spring. Between the disk 14<a> and the disks 12<a>, 13<a>, a number of disks 17, 15, 16 are arranged so as to be operated in succession by the arm 14 through the medium of abutments 17<i> 15<i>, 16<i>, as shown in Fig. 4. The disks are co-axially arranged on a pin 18. The disks 17, 15, 16 are separated from one another and from the disks 12<a>, 13<a> by V-shaped friction surfaces 21 faced with leather, and the disk 14<a> is separated from the disks 17, 15 by leather washers 17<c>, 15<c>. The pressure between the disks may be varied by nuts 19. The disk 17 is divided in a plane transverse to its axis into two portions united by projections 17<a> on one part fitting into corresponding recesses on the other part, this facilitates assembling. The joints on the frame and axle respectively are formed by leather-lined cones 30, 31 and leather washers 38, 33, 35, the washers 35, 38 bearing against metal washers.
