Abstract

9216. Soc. Anon. des Automobiles et Cycles Peugeot. April 19, 1911, [Convention date]. Vibration-dampers. - Relates to frictional shock - absorbers for use in conjunction with vehicle springs and of the type comprising exterior friction plates connected for example, to the frame, internal plates connected to the axle, and floating intermediate plates having curved slots of different lengths in which a pin on the exterior or interior plates engages so as to cause a progressive increase in the frictional resistance according to the deflexion of the springs, the floating plates being provided with a detachable lever for testing the degree of frictional resistance. According to the invention, the arm of the floating plate is arranged diametrically opposite to the other arms, and is provided with a finger for testing the frictional resistance without the use of a separate tool. Fig. 2 shows in part sectional plan one arrangement in which a plate e attached to the vehicle frame is con nected by a central bolt a with an outer plate e'. Mounted upon the bolt a by concentric hubs are inner plates i, i' connected with the axle by a joint g, and an intermediate floating plate c having an eye c<2> engaging over a pin f attached to the plate e. Between the various plates, friction washers h made of fibre or leather are arranged and packings k of similar material are arranged between the hubs. For small vibrations the plate c moves with the plates i, i' and two friction surfaces only are operative, but for large vibrations the plate c is held by the contact of the pin f with the end of the slot c<2> and four friction surfaces are brought into operation. The plate c is provided with a finger c<3> which allows of verifying by hand the frictional resistance of the shock-absorber without unmounting any part of the same. The frictional resistance between the plates can be adjusted by a nut l bearing against a spring washer m. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which springs r, r<1> are arranged between extensions c<4>, c<5> on the arm c' of the plate c and a finger p carried by the plate e, to prevent sudden passage from the small to the large resistance.
