Buffers.-In buffers for railway and like vehicles wherein each buffer rod is provided with both main and supplementary springs for absorbing the initial and final buffing shocks respectively, such springs being arranged tender-wise within the buffer casing, an axially movable ring situated between the two springs is adapted to bear against a shoulder towards the inner end of the buffer casing, so that the supplementary spring may be held under any desired initial compression independently of the main spring. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the main buffing spring m, n is arranged between the plunger head g and a flange o on a collar p, which bears against the back-plate d, while a supplementary spring q, r is mounted between a washer s and the back-plate d, and does not come into action until a sleeve f connected to the head g contacts with the washer s. This washer bears against a shoulder a' on the buffer casing so that the supplementary spring may be independently compressed. In a modification, the outer end of the main spring bears against a washer, which abuts against a shoulder formed on the buffer rod e, the sleeve f being connected either to this washer or to the washer s. In a further modification, the sleeve f may be mounted loosely between the two washers, or between the head g and the washer s. The main spring m, n, shown constructed of india-rubber and metal plates, may be replaced by a coiled metallic spring. A collar on the inner end of the sleeve f may be adapted to contact with a shoulder on the buffer casing to prevent the sleeve from coming completely out of the casing.
