Abstract
18,636. Gatwood, W. Aug. 8. Buffers are constructed so as to have a longer stroke than usual, and where the plunger is made with a central shank the case is made in two or more pieces of pressed steel. The central shank of the plunger is guided by a bell-shaped washer f, also of pressed steel, made from one, two, or more pieces, and secured by shrinking on a ring e or otherwise, Fig. 1. In one form, the shank is made short and does not penetrate the base-plate. Instead of using a nut, the outward movement may be limited by an ingegral collar in conjunction with a split washer at the base-plate as described in Specification 16,037/09. In the case of buffers without a central shank the sleeve is of two diameters and in two or more pieces. In each buffer there may be employed two springs of different strengths, the inner one being of metal, Fig. 13, or india-rubber, Fig. 14. The motion of the outer spring may be limited by the abutment of the shoulder a<2> with the flange b<2>, Fig. 13, or c<2>, Fig. 14, and that of the inner spring by the abutment of one of the washers against the base-plate.
