Abstract

6136. Gatwood, W., and O'Brien, H. E. March 11. Buffers.-Relates to buffers of the type having a volute spring of which the base coil is either made cylindrical or is coiled slightly in the opposite direction to the main volute. The invention consists in securing the base coil of the volute spring to the base-plate by forming inner and outer flanges on the buffer casing. Fig. 1 shows one construction in which the base coil r of the volute spring c is of the same depth as the other coils and is secured to the base-plate e by inner and outer flanges b<2> b<3> on the buffer casing b. Fig. 2 shows the base coil x reduced in depth. Fig. 5 shows the buffer casing b expanded at n to include auxiliary springs which are formed of rubber rings q acting between flanged washers p, p<1>, and which are acted upon by a shoulder on the plunger a after the volute spring has been compressed. The auxiliary springs are also acted upon by the head d on the plunger to cushion the rebound. Fig. 11 shows an inner sleeve w which acts against a washer m after the auxiliary springs have been compressed. Specification 19,362/09 is referred to.
