Abstract

29.630. Spencer, A. G. Dec. 23. Buffers.-In a buffer of the type in which one or more springs at the inner side of the headstock are employed in combination with one or more springs at the outer side of the headstock, a thrust-transmitting sleeve o extending through the headstock is disposed between the compression plate b of the inner springs and the abutment plate of the outer springs. The sleeve may be formed integral with one or other of the plates b, n. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, the outer end of an outer spring f bears against the flange r of a sleeve s extending through the buffer casing and bearing against the rear face of the buffer head. In a modification, the sleeve s is dispensed with, and the plate r is moved inwardly by a shoulder on the buffer rod c. In another modification, Fig. 4, an additional spring w is disposed around the sleeve o between the headstock and a compression plate y bearing against a shoulder y<1> in the buffer casing g, and the plate r is provided with a sleeve extension x which, towards the end of the buffing-stroke, bears against the plate y to compress the spring w. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the additional spring w is disposed within a plunger z, which slides on the casing g, the end of which bears against the compression plate y towards the end of the buffing-stroke. Steel or india-rubber springs may be employed.
