Abstract

4059. Spencer, A. April 20, 1911. Buffers; draw-gear.-A main spring of the type composed of rubber-rings with embedded metal plates, which contact with one another or with division plates when the spring has been compressed a certain amount, is employed with an auxiliary spring of the multiple-concentric rubber-ring type. The compound spring may be arranged in a case secured to the vehicle headstock or between the headstock and a crossbeam of the underframe. The main spring, operated through a ring d by a shoulder e on the rod b, is composed of rubber rings a<1>, in which arc embedded flanged plates a<2>, which limit the compression of the spring by contacting with division plates a<3>. The auxiliary spring f, which is formed of metal plates and concentric annular rings of rubber, is brought into operation through a plate g<1> after the main spring is fully compressed.
