Abstract
8064. Haworth, A. E., and Beesley, J. W. March 31. Composite springs; connexions and attachments applicable generally for tensile and compressive springs. - Relates to vehicle springs of the kind described in Specifications 3385/07 and 15,961/10, in which the ends of the ordinary leaf springs are connected to a member capable of a limited sliding movement with respect to a second member carried by the frame against the action of auxiliary helical or other springs. According to the invention, the auxiliary spring is made weaker than the main spring so that, when the load on the vehicle exceeds a certain amount, the excess load is entirely taken by the leaf springs, the auxiliary springs going out of action until the load is reduced. The laminated spring H is shown attached by a pin F to blocks I sliding in slots E in the slipper mounting A, which itself slides on the frame D. The helical spring C is mounted between the abutment M on the slipper A and the abutment L connected by links J with the block I. The length of the slots E is such that the compression of the helical spring ceases when the load on the vehicle causes the top of the slots to contact with the block I, further load being then taken by the laminated spring alone. A modification, in which the block is carried by a spring member on the frame and slides in slots in links depending from the end of the laminated spring, is also described.
