Abstract

Stop-motions, shuttle. -A shuttle-smash protector mechanism for drop - box looms comprises feelers 19, 20, Figs. 1 and 4, pivoted on studs 17, 18 on loose sleeves 15, 16 on the protector r o d 13, whereby the feelers can rock in the direction of the length of the lay and also transversely thereto. The feelers have downwardly-extending arms 19<2>, 20<2> acted upon by springs 23, 24, and are connected by links 25, 30 to bell-cranks 26, 31, the arms 26<2>, 31<2> of which can respectively engage side projections 29<1>, 29<2> of a dagger 29 provided with a front projection 29<3>. When the shipper handle and rod 3 are moved to start the loom, an arm 34 acts upon a pin 35 and raises a cam 36 pivoted on a stand 38. The dagger 29 engages a roll 40 on the stand during the beat-up, whereby the dagger is depressed and, through the connexions 26, 25, &c., rocks the feelers away from the ends of the binders 11 while the shuttle - boxes are changing. If a shuttle should be present in both of the shuttle-boxes in line with the raceway, the corresponding binders 11 are moved outwards and the feelers 19, 20 are moved under the action of the springs 23, 24 into engagement with the ends of the binders, and the dagger 29 remains depressed, and during the backward movement of the lay the projection 29<3> thereon engages the part 36<a> of the cam 36, rocks this plate and the arm 34, and thus stops the loom. If a shuttle should be absent from one of the boxes however, the spring 23 or 24 is able to rock inwards the corresponding feeler and thus rock the corresponding bell-crank, which raises the dagger 29, and the loom is not stopped. Slots in plates 21, 22 limit the movement of the feelers 19, 20, but allow them to rock with the sleeves 15, 16 if the engaging end of a feeler should rest upon a binder and the binder be subsequently moved out by a shuttle entering the box.
