Abstract

6478. Burwell, E. L. March 15. Docks. - A ship lift 4, Fig. 9, is operated by " lift- " ing - units " 38 running upon inclined guide - ways. These units may be self-propelled into position, for example electrically as in the unit 75 or locomotives 74 may be employed either separately or in combination as shown in Fig. 9, and in these cases the tractive power may be employed as well as the dead weight. The units 38 may be linked together and may be filled with water after being hoisted into position. Upon the lift 4 is a cradle 10, 11, Fig. 3, upon which r u n, transversely, towers 15 for supporting the vessel 14 by means of flexible members 25 and contact rolls 24; or slings, Fig. 8, swung from derricks may be employed. The overhead shafts over which the lifting-chains pass are preferably controlled by band brakes, and the dead weight of the elevator may be counterbalanced.
