Abstract
932,128. Transferring liquid cargoes. E. F. TIPPETTS, R. W. ABBETT, G. T. McCARTHY, J. H. STRATTON, E. K. BRYANT, F. LILIEN, L. A. LOVELL, T. J. FRATAR, W. PROKOSCH, and B. SILVESTON, [trading as TIPPETTSABBETT - MCCARTHY - STRATTON [Firm of]]. March 24, 1960 [March 24, 1959], No. 10444/60. Class 78 (4). Liquid is transferred to and from a ship T 2 by a rigid powerluffed pipe 19 connected at its outer end to a flexible conduit 23 the outer end of which can be moved horizontally and vertically by power means controlled by changes in tension in the conduit. In the form illustrated the outer end of the hose 23 is supported by a crane 43, 44 and the inner end is connected by a swivel joint 22 to the pipe 19 which is luffed by a cable 34 connected to a winch 31 and to a device 38 which controls the winch 31 in such a way as to maintain a constant tension in the cable 34. Several pipes 19, each connected to a corresponding hose 23, are shown mounted in a single tower 10 and controlled by separate winches 31. The pipes 19 are preferably fed through independently rotating axially-aligned sleeves from a single conduit 17. The hoist winch of the crane 43 may be mounted in the jib. Each swivel joint 22 is reinforced by a bracket 24 connected by bearings 25 to the pipe 19 and formed with a surface 27 to which the hose 23 is secured at 26. The controls for the system may be operated from a platform 42, and one such platform may be mounted on each side of the tower. The tower may run along the wharf W on rails. The jib 43 may slew.
