The outer portion D (Fig. 2) of a system of flexible or jointed piping B, C, D for transferring a liquid cargo is supported by means which can manoeuvre it horizontally and vertically. As illustrated, the piping includes swivel couplings 66, 100, 122, 134, 138, 144 permitting universal movement of a union 140 at the ship-board end of the piping. The length of piping C is suspended from a jib E by a rope 160 but when the jib is luffed past the vertical the swivel 122 supports the piping C from the jib. The length of piping D is carried by a rope 170 passing over a jib-end pulley 174 to a tackle 170 operated by a single-acting ram 188. The jib E is luffed by ropes 202, 202a passing over pulleys 200 fast with the jib to single-acting rams 208. The jib is counterbalanced by a weight 220, suspended from a rope 230 passing over pulley 232, 234 and thence to an anchorage 252 (Fig. 4) which the rope reaches by way of a curved surface 242 or 240 shaped to provide the requisite counterbalancing movement in each position of the jib. The jib is slewed by a double-acting ram 70 (Fig. 6) pivoted at 72 to the frame of the apparatus and connected to a bracket 80 on the vertical portion B of the piping which forms the mast of the jib. Several devices such as that illustrated may be mounted side-by-side on a dockside and operated from a single source of pressure liquid by a common set of controls which can be switched to control any chosen jib and which are arranged so that each of the jibs not under control is free to move. Suitable pressure relief valves limit the stresses which can be caused in the structure of the jib by movement of the ship.
