3730. Adair, M., Cameron, J. A., and Ainsworth, F. July 25, 1908, [Convention date]. Sewing - machines; grouped machines. - In apparatus for stitching simultaneously the opposite edges of a continuous strip of cloth, comprising two sewing-machines as described in Specification 5002/09, devices are provided to ensure that the two edges of the fabric are fed equally. The edges of the fabric are turned up by suitable guides before reaching the sewing- machines, and levers E rest upon the edges. If one edge is not fed so fast as the other, the upturned portion of that edge becomes slack, and allows the lever E to fall and make electric contact with a pin k<3>. This completes the circuit of an electro-magnet adapted to stop the machine operating upon the other edge of the fabric as described in Specification 16,923/09. When the fabric edge becomes taut again, the lever E is raised and the faster machine is restarted. As alternatives, the levers E might be adapted to cause a reduction in the speed of the faster machine or an increase in the speed of the slower machine.
