The present invention relates to novel safety devices for roll mechanisms such as wringers, and more particularly to novel means whereby. the rolls thereof may be instantly and readily released from their normal contiguous or operating position.
Among the objects of the present invention is to provide an improved .wringer construction wherein novel means are provided for releasably holding the rolls of the wringer in their normal operative position, and which may be instantly operated for releasing the holding means.
More specifically, it is an object of the inven-' tion to provide an improved wringer construction wherein means is provided for releasably holding the wringer rolls in their normal operative position, and also wherein an electric circuit includ: 'ing an electromagnet is arranged to control the holding means so that the holding means will be instantly released upon de-energization of the electromagnet.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wringer construction having holding means for maintaining the wringer rolls in operative relation and an electrical control arrangement for the holding means including an electromagnet, means adjacent the bite of the rolls for opening the circuit to release the holding means, and means for re-energizing the electromagnet when the holding means is restored to its operative position. Since the electric circuit is controlled by a means located adjacent the bite of the rolls an excess amount of material or clothing fed into the wringer will contact with or engage the control means and operate the same for relieving the holding means. In addition, the release mechaiiisr'n is also accessible for ready actuation should the fingers or arm of an operator become caught in the wringer rolls. I A further object of the invention is to provide a safety device for power actuated roll mechanisms or the like of such character that the power actuating means is only rendered operative when the rolls are held in their operative position.
More specifically, it is an object of the invention to provide a safety device for an electric motor driven wringer including a normally open leasing the rolls is shown in a construction in which the top roll thereof is held or forced into contacting engagement with the lower'roll and driven thereby. Means, including a movable member pivotally supported in the wringer frame is provided, and when in its lowered position resiliently forces, urges and holds these rolls in their normal operative and contiguous positions. An electrical circuit is further provided having an electro-magnetic device therein adapted, when the circuit is closed, to magnetically engage with a block or armature carried by the movable member to hold the member in its lowered position and the rolls in their normal contiguous and operative positions. When the circuit is broken and the electro-magnetic device is de-energized, the movable member is released, as likewise the rolls. One or more switches may be provided in the circuit which are controlled by a member or members pivotally secured to either one or both sides of the wringer and adjacent to the bite of the rolls. Upon movement of either one or both of such members, either one or both of these switches are operated to break the circuit and de-energize the electro-magnet which releases the member of the roll holding means. The switch or switches operate again to close the circuit upon release of pressure on these members. The circuit, however, is not then entirely completed for energizing the electro-magnet, inasmuch as another switch, operated by movement of the member of the roll holding means is opened upon movement of this member. However, upon a lowering of this member, this switch is operated to close the circuit, whereby the electro-magnet is again energized for holding the member in its lowered position.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the following description proceeds and the features of novelty which characterize the invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification.

Referring now more in detail to the drawings, an embodiment selected to illustrate the invention is shown in a wringer construction having a frame I comprising upper and lower frame members 2 and 3, respectively, and end members 4 and 5, a lower and upper roll 6 and 1, respectively, being mounted in the end frame members. The lower roll is provided with a shaft (not shown) extending through the end frame member i, and is coupled with a stub shaft (not shown) in a gear head 8 mounted on the upright I tubing or housing 9, suitable pinions or gears being provided in this gear or wringer head which are driven by a shaft III for driving the wringer roll 6. The shaft ll of the upper wringer roll has its ends journalled in the blocks or bearings I! which are slidable in the upright frame members 4 and i.
Means are provided for contacting these blocks or bearings for forcing, urging, or holding the upper roll 1 into or in contact with the lower wringer roll, whereby the same is driven thereby for feeding clothes or other materials through the bite of or between the rolls.
These mils are held in their operative position or in contiguous relation by an elongated leaf spring IS, the ends of which are adapted to contact with the blocks or bearings l2. Centrally of this leaf spring'is secured a socket member ll having a cup-shaped depression in its upper surface which is engaged by the end of a threaded screw or member l5 adapted to pass downwardly through an opening [5' in the top of the upper wringer frame member 2. This screw member I! threadedly engages a threaded opening in the end of a bar or lever l6, and is adapted to be adjusted therein by way of a hand wheel or knob 16' secured to the upper end thereof.
The bar or lever I6 is provided with laterally projecting and opposite trunnions or projections l1, each of which are adapted to slide along and engage with a cam surface It of guide lugs or cars I! having a flange 20 secured to the underside of the top frame by means of rivets 2|, or
the like, and protruding up through an on opposite sides of the opening l5 in the top frame.
When the screw threaded member I5 is inserted into the opening of the top frame of the wringer and between the lugs or ears l9 and raised toward a vertical position, the trunnions i! slide along the cam surface of the lugs i9 and engage with the under-cut, lower socket, or recessed portion l 8 thereof, at which time a downward movement of the lever causes the screw threaded member to contact with the socket member I4 andfiatten the spring l3, thereby exerting a pressure against the bearings. This applied pressure causes the upper roll I to be forced or urged into contact or into a contiguous position with the lower roll 6. The screw threaded member may be adjusted in the opening of the lever or arm, by means of the hand wheel It for varying the tension on the spring II, as likewise the pressure between the rolls 6 and I.
A lug or'proiection 22 is carried by, secured to, or otherwise made integral with the movable member or arm l6, and is adapted, when the arm is lowered adjacent its lowermost position, to engage with another lug 23 having flanges secured, by means of rivets 24, or the like, to the upper frame member 2, and protruding through an opening therein above the top surface of said member. when the arm or movable member is lowered to a position so as to cause an engagement of these lugs, the member is prevented from moving in a longitudinal direction, along the frame, as from left to right, as viewed in Figs. 1, 4, 5 and 6 of the drawings. Lateral movement of the bar or lever I8 is prevented by means of guide lugs 24' secured to the top frame member 2 adjacent and on opposite sides of lug 23. The engagements of these lugs prevent disengagement of the trunnions I I with the recesses II when the arm or movable member I6 is in its lower and operative position.
It should be noted that the lever I6 is elongated and that a holding force exerted at or near the outer end thereof will be multiplied several times in resisting the tendency toward an upward swinging movement induced by the opposing force of the spring. Hence, the application of a relatively light force thereto is ample to hold the lever in operative position regardless of the amount of opposing force exerted by the spring.
A laminated block 25 is pivotally mounted in a bracket 26 secured by any suitable means to the outer end of. the lever or arm l6 and is adapted to contact with the ends of laminated cores 2! and 28 of an electro-magnetic device which is, in the present instance suitably mounted upon a bracket 29 secured in any desired manner to the upright frame member 4.
In consequence of the foregoing relationship of parts, if the electromagnet is energized and the armature block 25 brought into engagement therewith, by proper movement of the lever Ii to assemble the device, the electromagnet will exert a holding force, which may be relatively small, on the end of the lever to maintain the pressure on the wringer rolls. Since the lever it, if not secured against movement, will be swung to relieve pressure on the rolls by the force of said pressure, deenergization of the electromagnet .is effective to instantly relieve the pressure and re-' lease the rolls for relative shifting movement. Hence, the means by which pressure is created on the rolls is ineffective, of itself, to maintain such pressure and creation, as well as the maintenance of the operative pressure is, therefore,
dependent upon the excitation of the electromagnetic device.
The control circuits in which the electromagnet is included will now bedescribed. The electromagnet is generally designated at 30 and comprises the usual coil of wire which is secured to and around the core 21 for energizing the cores of the electromagnetic device. One end of this coil of wire, as at 3| (Fig. 10), is secured to a terminal of a switch or circuitbreaker 32 (Figs. 8 and 10) connected to one side of the frame 4, while the other end 33 of the coil is secured to the terminal of another switch or circuit breaker 34 (Figs. '7 and 10) supported or mounted on the end frame 4 and beneath the arm or lever l6.
Leads 35 and 36 are connected with the other terminals of the switches or circuit breakers 34 and 32, respectively. The other end of the lead 35 is connected with a ring 31 mounted on the wringer and around the housing 9, through a wiper or brush such as a spring pressed carbon terminal 38. This ring, in turn, is connected with one of the cables or wires of a suitable source of electrical energy, such as ,the power line 39. The other end of lead 36 is connected with a ring 4|] mounted adjacent and insulated from the ring 31 through another wiper 4| which is preferably similar to the terminal 38. The other cable or wire of the power line 39 is connected with the,
'lng 40. The driving motor by which the shaft I9 is actuatedtis connected in one of the leads 39. These carbon terminals or b'rushes 38 and 49 are suitably mounted about or to the housing 9 and remain stationary, and are adapted to complete an electrical circuit through the rings 31 and 49, .and leads 35 and 36, irrespective of .the position of the wringer. I
The switch or circuit breaker 32 (Fig. 8) comprises terminals having metallic flexible contacts 4| and 42 mounted on a base 43 secured to the frame 4. These contacts are adapted to normally contact or engage one another to complete the electrical circuit through the electromagnetic device, when the terminals or contacts of the switch or circuit breaker 34 are in engagement. A housing 44 is provided and is secured to the base 43 and carries an insulated plunger 45 adapted to engage and spread the terminals 4| and 42 apart to break the circuit and thereby de-energize the electromagnetic device.
This plunger is moved into such contacting engagement by means of a bar or strap 46 (Figs. 1, 3, 4, and 8) having an end hinged or otherwise flexibly connected to the frame member 5 and extending across the wringer frame slightly above the bite between the rolls 6 and I, the other end being adapted to slide along a bracket 47 and contact with the plunger 45. When a slight pressure is applied to the bar or strap 46 at any point along its length, the plunger 45 is pressed into engagement with the terminals 4| and 42 to separate the same and to break the circuit, thereby de-energizing the electro-magnetic device, assuming that the switch or circuit breaker 34 is closed. When the circuit is closed for energizing the electro-magnetic device, and the block 25 on the arm I6 is brought into proximity with the cores 21 and 28, the arm is thereby heldin its lowered position, and the contiguous or operative position of the rolls is maintained. When this circuit is broken, by means of the air-- cuit breaker 32, in the manner described, the deenergizing of the electro-magnetic device releases the arm or lever l6 and as the lug 22 thereof The switch or circuit breaker 34 is provided in the circuit so that even though pressure is removed from the arm or lever 46 to allow terminals M and 42 to spring back into contacting engagement, the circuit of the electro-magnetic device is not completed until the switch or circuit breaker 34 is closed. The circuit breaker 34 is of any suitable type which may be operated to open and close the circuit in direct accordance with the disengagement'and engagement of the wringer rolls. In one preferred form, the circuit breaker comprises terminals 43 and 49 (Fig. '7) secured in a housing 50 mounted on the frame member 4 and having a tubular casing 5| mounted in the upper portion thereof. A vertical rod or member 52 is provided and is movable upwardly and downwardly in openings in a bracket 53 connected to the frame member 4. The lower end of this rod is provided with an enlarged cylindrical portion 54 slidable in the tubular housing 5|; A coiled spring 55 is loosely interposed between the lower face of the portion 54 and the terminal 46 and the normal arrangement is such that, when the rod 52 is free, the terminal 48 is out of engagement with the terminal 49.
The lever arm I6 is adapted to contact with the upper end of the rod 52 so that, as the operator moves the arm to its lowered position, the rod 52 compresses the coil spring 55 whereby the terminal 48 is caused to contact with the terminal 49 for completing the circuit for the electromagnetic device, provided, of course, that the circuit breaker 32 is closed.
From the above description, it will be seen that the circuit for the electro-magnetic device is completed by way of the circuit breaker 34 when the arm is manually moved downwardly whereby the block 25 thereof engages with the ends of the cores 2'! and 28 of the electro-magnetic device.
An attendant of the wringer, by pressing against the bar or strap 46 may effect a breaking of the completed circuit at any time to deenergize the electro-magnetic device and cause a release of the movable arm or lever l6. Upon a release of the arm I6, the same moves upwardly, and as soon as the lug 22 thereof passes the lug 23, the trunnions I! become disengaged from the recesses l8 for releasing pressure on the spring I3 and between the upper and lower rolls of the wringer. The bar 46, shown in the illustrated embodiment disclosing the invention, is in such a position that should clothes or material bunch up in their passage through the wringer rolls, the same will contact with the bar 46 to operate the circuit breaker 32, and to de-energize the electro-magnetic device. This de-energizing of the electro-magnetic device releases the arm l6 and rolls 6 and I from their contiguous or operative position. Any number of additional circuit breakers or switches, such as 32, may be placed in the circuit for discontinuing the operation of the device. For example, a strap or bar similar to the bar 46 may be flexibly connected to the other side of the wringer for operating a switch or circuit breaker similar to 32 provided in the circuit and on the other side of the wringer. It will be seen that the present invention provides a novel and easy way of instantaneously and quickly releasing the pressure between the rolls of the wringer construction, and which may be readily operated by an attendant should his finger, arm, clothing or the like become caught between the rolls of the wringer.
While I have herein described and upon the drawings shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but comprehends other constructions, details, arrangements of parts and features without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as expressed in the appended claims.
Having thus disclosed the invention,
I claim:
ii. In a wringer construction having rolls mounted therein, detachably engageable holding means for maintaining said rolls in cooperative relation, means including an electromagnet for controlling said holding means, means for deenergizing said electromagnet for release of said holding means, and means for again energizing said electromagnet when said holding means is again in an operative position.
2. In a wringer construction, the combination of rolls, means for urging said rolls together under operating pressure, releasably engaged holding means for maintaining said rolls in cooperative relation, means including an electromagnetic device and a control circuit therefor associated with said holding means for maintaining said holding means operative, and circuit controlling means for breaking said circuit to release said holding means and for reestablishing said circuit when said holding means is again in its operativeposition.
3. In a wringer construction having rolls mounted therein, holdingmeans for maintaining said rolls in cooperative relation, means including an electrical circuit having an electro-magnet therein for controlling said holding means, means in the circuit and adjacent and along the bite of said rolls for de-energizing said electro-magnet for release of said holding means, and means in the circuit and controlled by said holding means for again energizing said electro-magnet when said holding means is in a' normal operative position.
4. In a wringer construction having rolls mounted therein, holding means for maintaining said rolls in cooperative relation, means including an electrical circuit having an electro-magnet for controlling said holding means, means in the circuit for tie-energizing said electro-magnet for release of said holding means, and means for completing said circuit to energize said electromagnet in the operation of resetting said holding means in its normal operative position.
5. In a wringer construction having rolls mounted therein, holding means for maintaining said rolls in cooperative relation, means including an electrical circuit having an electro-magnet for controlling said holding means, means in the circuit for de-energizing said electro-magnet for release of said holding means, and means engaged by said holding means for breaking said circuit when said electro-magnet is de-energized and for completing sald'circuit when said holding means is in its normal operative position.
6. In a wringer construction having rolls mounted therein, means including a movable member for latching said rolls in contiguous relation, a. magnetic device adapted to be energized to magnetically attract and hold said movable member, and means for de-energizing said device for release of said member and rolls.
7. In a wringer construction the combination of a frame, rolls mounted therein, means including a movable member having in one po- 5 sition thereof an intereng'agement with said frame for holding said rolls in contiguous relation, an electro-magnetic means comprising an electro-magnet adapted to magnetically engage and hold said member in said position of interengagement, and an electrical circuit for energizing and deenergizing said electro-magnet.
8. In a wringer construction having rolls mounted therein, means including an arm for holdingxsaid rolls in contiguous relation, an electrical circuit having an electro-magnet secured to said wringer and adapted to magnetically attract said arm, switches in said circuit, means flexibly connected to said wringer for operating one switch to de-energize said electro-magnet, and a movable member engaged by said arm and adapted to operate another one of said switches for energizing said electro-magnet when said arm is in its normal operative position.
9. In a wringer construction, the combination of a frame, rolls mounted in said frame for movement into and out of cooperating relation, means for latching said rolls in cooperative relation, and means including an electromagnet for maintaining the latching means against release.
10. In a wringer construction, the combination of rolls mounted for movement into and out of cooperating relation, means for producing operative pressure on said rolls, interengageable means operative to maintain said first mentioned means in pressure producing condition, and an electromagnet for maintaining said interengageable means in such operative condition.
11. In a wrin'ger construction, the combination of rolls mounted for movement into and out of cooperating relation, means for producing operative pressure on said rolls, including an impositive interengagement for maintaining said means in condition to produce such pressure and an electromagnet energizable to maintain said interengagement and deenergizable to break said interengagement to relieve the pressure.
12. In a wringer construction, the combination of rolls mounted for movement into and out of cooperating relation, pressure creating means for producing an operating pressure on said rolls. holding means acting against the force of said pressure creating means for maintaining said rolls in cooperating relation, said holding means being normally insuflicient to resist the force opposed thereby, and means including an electromagnetic device for preventing a releasing movement of the holding means.
13. In a wringer, the combination of rolls mounted for relative movement toward and away 60 from each other, resilient means for applying pressure on said rolls when the rolls are cooperatively associated, an electromagnet, and connections between the electromagnet and said resilient means and depending upon the excitation 65 of the electromagnet for holding the resilient means in pressure applying condition.
14. A clothes wringer comprising a frame having therein wringer rolls, and spring means for exerting pressure on the rolls, means for holding 7 said spring means under pressure, the last mentioned means being normally incapable by itself of resisting the spring pressure, and electromagnetic means for holding said last mentioned means in operative condition.
' 15. In a wringer, the combination of cooperating wringer rolls, means for creating pressure on the rolls, said switch embodying spring means normally maintaining the switch open to break the circuit and also embodying means associated with said manually releasable means operable by said manually releasable means to hold the switch closed against the force of said spring means but operable by actuation of said manually releasable means to permit said spring means to open the switch.
17. A wringer comprising, in combination, coacting rolls mounted for separating movement, releasable means for maintaining said rolls in contiguous operative relation under spring pressure, means including an electric motor circuit for rotating said rolls, manually operable means for actuating said releasable means to permit separation of said rolls, and an electric switch mounted adjacent to said rolls and connected in the circuit to said motor for starting and stopping the motor and the rolls, said switch embodying resilient .means tending to separate the contacts thereof .and to open said circuit, and means by which said contacts are maintained closed when the wringer is in normal operative condition and by which the contacts are released to the action of said resilient means to open the motor circuit each time said releasable means is operated to permit separation of said rolls.
' 18. A wringer comprising, in combination, coacting rolls mounted for' separating movement,
releasable means for maintaining said rolls in contiguous operative relation under spring pressure, an electric circuit in control of wringer operation, manually operable means for actuating said releasable means to permit separation of said rolls, and an electric switch mounted adjacent to said rolls and interposed in said circuit for controlling the operation of the wringer, said switch embodying contacts normally open to break said circuit, and means by which said contacts are maintained closed when the wringer is in normal operative position and by which the contacts are released to return to the normally open condition thereof whenever said releasable means is operated to permit separation of said rolls.
19. In a wringer, the combination of a frame having rolls mounted therein, releasable means for maintaining said rolls in contiguous position, driving means for said rolls, an electromagnetic device energizable to hold said releasable means against release, and means connected with said electromagnetic device for stopping said driving means when the electromagnetic device is deenergized.
20. A safety device for mechanism having two relatively shiftable members one of which is a roll, releasable means for holding said members in operative relation, and an electric motor for driving said roll, comprising, in combination, electrically actuated means for maintaining said releasable means against release, and a motor circuit including a circuit closing means-which is operable only when the holding means is so maintained against release.
21. A safety device for mechanism having two is relatively shiftable members one oi which is a roll, releasable means for holding said members in operative relation, and an electric motor for driving said roll comprising, in combination, electrically actuated means for maintaining said 10 means against release, and a motor circuit adapted to be closed only when the holding means is so maintained against release including means for independently interrupting motor operation when said motor circuit is closed.
22. A safety device for mechanism having two relatively shiftable members one of which is a roll, releasable means for holding said members in operative relation, and an electric motor for driving said roll comprising, in combination, 20 electrically actuated means for maintaining said releasable means against release, a motor circuit adapted to be closed only when the holding means is so maintained against release, and means operable in an emergency to interrupt the energization of said electrically actuated means.
23. A safety device for mechanism having two relatively shiftable members one of which is a roll, releasable means for holding said members in operative relation, and an electric motorfor driving said roll comprising, in combination, electa'ically actuated means for maintaining said means against release, a motor circuit adapted to be closed only when the holding means is so maintained against release, and a normally closed circuit breaker controlling the energization of said electrically actuated means and arranged to be opened by an operator.
24. In a wringer construction having rolls mounted therein, detachably engageabie holding means for maintaining said rolls in cooperative relation, means including an electromagnet having an energizing circuit for controlling said holding means, a normally closed switch in said energizing circuit, means for momentarily opening said normally closed switch for tie-energizing said electromagnet to release said holding means, a normally open switch in said energizing circuit. and means operable in response to the release of said holding means for permitting said last named switch to assume its normally open position to maintain said electromagnet de-energized and for closing said normally open switch to again energize said electromagnet when said holding means is again in an operative position.
25. In a wringer construction having rolls mounted therein, detachably engageabie holding means for maintaining said rolls in cooperative relation, means including an electromagnet having an energizing circuit for controlling said holding means, a switch in said energizing circuit normally biased to its closed position, means including an actuator bar extending adjacent the bite between said rolls for momentarily opening said switch to de-energize said electromagnet and 55 release said holding means, a second switch in said energizing circuit normally biased to its open position, means including a member associated with said holding means for maintaining said second switch in closed position when said hold- 70 ing means is in operative position and disengaged from said switch to permit opening thereof for maintaining deenergization of said electromagnet upon release of said holding means, said last named means being operative to reclose said secfl and switch for re-energizing said electromagnet when said holding means is restored to operative position.
26. In a wringer construction having rolls mounted therein, detachably engageable holding means for maintaining said rolls in cooperative relation, means including an electromagnet having an energizing circuit for controlling said holding means, a pair of two-position switches associated with said energizing circuit and respectively biased to their open and closed positions, means -for momentarily moving one of said switches against its normal bias to condition said energizing circiut for release oi! said holding means, and means operable in response to the release of said holding means for permitting the other of said switches to assume its normally open position to maintain said energizing circuit in said last named condition and for moving said other switch against its normal bias to again restore said electromagnet to its normal condition of energization when said holding means is again in operative position.
27. In a wringer construction having rolls mounted therein, detachably engageable holding means for maintaining said rolls in cooperative relation, means including an energizable electric circuit for controlling said holding means, a pair of two-position switches associated with said electric circuit, each of said switches being normally biased to one of its two positions, means for momentarily moving one oi! said switches against its normal bias to condition said electric circuit for release of said holding means, means operable in response to the release of said holding means for permitting the other of said switches to operate under its normal bias to maintain said electric circuit in its last named condition, and means for moving said other switch'against its normal bias to restore said electric circuit to its original condition when said holding means is again in operative position.
28. In a wringer construction having rolls mounted therein, means including an arm for holding said rolls in contiguous relation, an electrical circuit having an electromagnet secured to said wringer and adapted to magnetically attract said arm, a plurality of two-position switches in said circuit, each or said switches being normally biased to one position, resilient means operable under manual pressure to move one 0! said switches against its normal bias irom said one 6 position to de-energize said electromagnet and thereby permit the release oi. said arm and adapted to resiliently move out of engagement with the switch to permit its return to said one position under its normal bias upon release of the 10 pressure on said resilient means. and a movable member engaged by said arm and adapted to maintain another of said switches in position against the normal bias thereof for energizing said electromagnet when said arm is in its normal 15 position, said movable member being positioned out of engagement withsaid other switch when said arm is in its released position thereby permitting said one switch to remain in position under its normal bias for maintaining said electro- 20 magnet de-energized.
29. In a wringer construction having rolls mounted therein, means including a magnetically permeable armature for holding said rolls in contiguous relation, an electrical circuit having an 25 electromagnet associated therewith and adapted to magnetically attract said armature, a plurality of two-position switches in said circuit, each 01' said switches being normally biased to one position, resilient means operable under manual pres- 30 sure to move one of said switches against its normal bias irom saidone position to condition said electrical circuit to release said holding means and adapted to resiliently move out of engagement with the switch to permit its return 35 to said one position under its normal bias upon release of the pressure on said resilient means, and a movable member adapted to maintain another of said switches in position against its normal bias when said holding means is in oper- 4o ative position and operable to release said other switch !or movement thereoi under its normal bias to maintain said electrical circuit conditioned for release of said holding means after said holding means has 'moved to its released position. 45
