Abstract
27,283. Parsons, C. A., and Cook, S. S. Nov. 23. Axial-flow type; circular-flow type. -Relates to turbines of the partial impingement with fractional conversion of pressure type, such as are described in Specifications 28,047/07, 17,872/08, 28,373/08, 28,375/08, and 28,376/08, and consists in withdrawing steam from the rotating blades during their passage through one set of short end blockings and delivering it to the blades when passing through another set, for which purpose these sets are connected by one or more passages. Figs. 1 and 2 show a turbine in which steam passes through guide blades a and rotating blades b into a chamber c from which it passes through a second series of blades, in the same direction, and in which passages e are formed in a member g which carries the guide blades a and the end blockings f. Fig. 4 shows a modification having two sets of connecting - passages, the second set being formed as grooves closed by the casing i. The end blockings may be connected only where the pressure difference is high, or two passages may there be provided, and only one where the difference is lower. Other methods of forming the passages either in the member g or the casing i are described. The ends of the pasages e are preferably formed oblique to agree with the direction of rotation of the blades b, while the delivering are restricted to increase the steam velocity slightly, and to prevent retarding effects, and the receiving ends are expanded. Steam, which would otherwise be carried from a part at a higher to a part at a lower pressure, is thus continuously restored to the part at higher pressure. The invention may be applied to all turbines of the above-described type, whether the blades are of " Parsons " or impulse type.
