Abstract

13,268. Tuckfield, C., and Garland, W. G. de F. June 8. Elastic-fluid turbines.-The rotor and casing are formed with pockets instead of blades, each set of rotor pockets overlapping two sets of stator packets, whereby the motive fluid is caused to flow in a serpentine manner. By this method of construction the stripping of blades is avoided and clearances may be reduced to a minimum. The rotor drum b, Figs. 1 and 2, is preferably conical and duplex, and is formed with rings of pockets b<1> by casting or milling. The rotor pockets are shown connected with circumferential grooves, but the latter are not essential and may be dispensed with. The casing is formed with crescent-shaped pockets a<1>. The motive fluid is admitted at each end and is passed from one ring of pockets b<1> to the next by way of the pockets a'. The action of the fluid in the pockets b<1> is similar to that in ordinary parallelflow turbines. The shape of the pockets may be varied.
