Abstract

18,441. Sharpe, G. W. Aug. 16. Jackets and covers; tread bands, projections, and surfaces. - A puncture-preventing shield, for use between the outer cover and the airtube or as an outer tread band, comprises short strips of thin steel, which may be coppered, arranged in separate circumferential rows on the tread of the shield in two layers, which break joint'and are separated by a rubber or like sheet, the strips in some cases being combined with longer strips transverse or inclined to them, which extend from the tread of the shield to its edges near the beads of the tyre. In the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the metal strips 6 of the outer layer are riveted to a canvas band 3 covered with rubber 5, and the spaces between their ends are covered by transverse strips 9, which are separated from the strips 6, by rubber strips 10; and the metal strips 15 of the inner layer, separated from the outer layer by rubber 14, are secured and arranged in the same way on a rubber-covered strip of canvas 23. The whole is vulcanized together between strips 4, 24 of felt, metallic wool, or like material and placed between the air-tube and the cover. In a modification, the layers of felt &c. are not employed, and the outer layer 4 is replaced by an extra canvas layer. When employed as a tread band, the canvas layers 3, 23 are formed by folding one sheet, so that pockets for side securing-bands are formed.
