Abstract

1070. Delon, J. Jan. 17, 1908, [Convention datel. Commutator switching-arrangements. - One terminal of an alternator is kept at constant potential, and the other is connected through a switch to two conductors, so that one conductor is charged when the maximum positive potential occurs and the other is charged at the maximum negative value. A metal ring a on the insulating-drum c is in contact with the brush f connected to the alternator, and is joined to a metal strip l. Two brushes b, b<1> are connected to a condenser, and, when the drum is rotated at the proper speed, the potential of one brush becomes equal to the maximum positive potential of the alternator, and the potential of the other brush becomes equal to the maximum negative potential. The difference of potential across the condenser is therefore twice the maximum value given by the alternator. With high potentials, the contact l may be fixed on supports s, s', Fig. 3, the former being of insulating-material, and the latter of conducting-material to connect the ring a to the contact l. The brushes b, b' are placed near enough to the path of the contact l for a spark to pass. The contact l need only be connected to the supply at the times of its passage under the brushes b,' b<1>. This is accomplished as shown in Fig. 6, by arranging the brushes b, b' at an angle of ninety degrees, and employing two additional brushes b<3>, b' connected to the supply and an additional contact l<1>.
