Abstract
17,797. Nolan, J. July 24. Turbines.-Water-current motors, in which the wheel is buoyant and is carried by a hinged or other frame, are provided with subsidiary air drums, whereby the wheel is kept at the proper degree of immersion in the current. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the frame a carrying the wheel d is freely mounted on a shaft c on the standards b. The shaft c carries a sprocket-wheel h<2> which is geared by a chain i with the sprocket-wheel h on the shaft of the water-wheel. The shaft c may be driven from the wheel by belt or other gearing. Power is taken from the shaft c at k. The water-wheel has a central air-tight drum f and is provided, in addition, with a subsidiary drum m supported by rods n from the main frame. The frame is provided with movable balance weights l. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the wheel is mounted on a fixed vertical shaft a carried by suitable members j, k. In the wheel g is an air-drum h, and subsidiary airdrums h<2>, h<3> are provided. A shaft b outside the shaft a is fitted with tongues n, Fig. 4, which fit grooves in the hub of the wheel. Rigidly connected with the shaft b are four vertical rods c which also pass through the hub of the wheel. This arrangement allows the wheel to rise and fall vertically over the rods c and tongues n, and also to communicate its rotary motion to the shaft b from which power is taken by bevel-wheels.
