Abstract

16,600. Ionides, A. G., and Goddard, J. W. Aug. 6. Gas or explosive-vapour engines, carburetting in. The carburettor is provided with a row of fuel jets, contiguous to the air-inlet opening, which are unmasked in succession by a member operated by suction or otherwise. Fuel from the float chamber A passes through a sheet of metal gauze G to a series of grooves C<1>, formed in the face of a hollow wedge-shaped piece C between the flat sides of the float chamber and mixing-chamber B. Air isdrawn through the opening E<1> in the casing E, then through ;the throat H, and past the fuel jets, the mixture passing to the engine through the outlet B'. In the cylindrical mixing-chamber B slides a piston J, Fig. 3, having a projection J<1> fitting in the opening H. The piston is connected by a tube L with a second piston K, sliding in an auxiliary chamber D and loaded by a spring L<1>. The end of the tube L carries a perforated cap J<2> forming the seat of a flap valve provided with a guard J<5>. The rod M, which may be graduated to show the power being developed, provides a means of moving the pistons J, K should they become tight. The area of the opening H is varied to suit varying atmospheric conditions by a plate N carried on pins N<2>, adjusted by a screw and having its side inclined to the edge of the opening. The plate N may be adjusted by the driver through a wire connexion or the like. To obtain an increased richness of mixture at low powers and at starting, the opening H is narrowed or covered by a plate at its starting end, or the projection J<1> is formed with a lateral portion which leaves a gap around the first two or three jets which may be larger than the others. Communication between the. casing E and float chamber A is established by a hole A<2>. The carburettor is heated by air, gases, or water circulating in the chamber B<2>. The float chamber may also be heated.
