Abstract

16,266. Saussard, L. A. July 31, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Motor road vehicles.-An epicyclic spur-gear train is combined with a disk-and-roller or like variable gear to form a change-speed and reversing gear suitable for motor-vehicles. The driving-element of the train, a planet-carrier A, is connected by a sleeve C to the friction disk B, and the whole is driven through bevel-gearing H, L from a power shaft F. The driven element of the train is an internally-toothed ring D secured to a differential casing M which drives the part-axles E. The planet-pinions S mesh with the ring D and also with a sun-pinion G, which is connected by a sleeve N and bevel-gearing P, Q to a shaft V parallel to the disk B. A friction roller O slides on a feather on the shaft V across the disk B and, by varying the speed of the pinion G, varies the speed and direction of rotation of the ring D &c. As the roller O approaches the centre of the disk B the speed of the ring D increases, and maximum speed is attained when the roller O slips clear of the disk B by coming opposite an annular recess W in the disk. The shaft V is swivel-mounted in bearings T, J so as to allow the maximum speed to be made positive by sliding the pinion P to the left until claws X upon it engage similar claws on the end of the sleeve C. In the case of heavy vehicles, the pinion O may be provided with domeshaped teeth as shown in Fig. 4. The Specification in the original form, as open to public inspection under Section 91 (3) (a), comprises also the arrangement shown in Fig. 5. The planetcarrier 3 and a cup-shaped friction member 11 are driven simultaneously by the power shaft 1 as before, but in opposite directions. The sun-pinion 8 is driven through a cone-shaped friction member 12 geared to the member 11 by rollers 20 of variable obliquity. This subject-matter does not appear in the Complete Specification as accepted.
