Abstract
5883. Madden, A. J. March 16. Direct air-pressure apparatus.-In apparatus of the type in which liquids are delivered under pressure for spraying, filtering, &c. by expanding a bellows in a closed tank containing the liquid, a valve is fitted in the compressed-air supply pipe which closes if the pressure rises too high. The apparatus is described as applied to forcing water through a filter on a railway train. Compressed air from the brake system passes through a pipe A into a valve box B, and through a pipe D into a bellows E contained in a tank G. The bellows is attached to the tank cover, which is clamped on and packed to make it water-tight. A second cock K fitted with attachment for a hand pump is provided for use when the usual compressed-air supply is not available, or for exhausting the bellows on the completion of an operation. Water enters the tank by a pipe L, and is forced out by a pipe M' and through a filter M. The bellows contains a spring P to assist in exhausting, and carries rollers which run in guides on the sides of the tank. The valve box B carries a piston valve C adjustably loaded by weights or a spring, which closes when the pressure in the pipe A rises too high, namely, above about 26 lbs. per square inch.
