Abstract

747,216. Compressed air brakes. BENDIXWESTINGHOUSE AUTOMOTIVE AIRBRAKE CO. Feb. 22, 1954 [March 4, 1953], No. 5201/54. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a compressed air brake system comprising a pneumatic servo-unit 14 of which the diaphragm 64 has a pressure chamber 62 on one side and a non-pressure exhaust chamber 76 on the other side, the exhaust chamber 76 is connected by a pipe 20 to the suction side of a reciprocating pump 10, which maintains a reservoir 12 at a constant pressure for operating the servo-unit 14. By using a continuously running compressor 10 having a clearance volume above the piston which gives a steady compression of about 100 pounds per square inch, it is found that such a system is simpler and less costly than one using unloading and governing mechanisms for the compressor. Water is discharged from the system by so actuating the servo-unit as to produce a supercharging of the compressor suction so that the delivery pressure exceeds the normal value and any liquid in the reservoir 12 is ejected through a sump filter 90, pipe 88, and loaded diaphragm release valve 96.
