Abstract

2433. Johnson, T. S. Feb. 3. Folding.-In a machine for folding cloth transversely by means of a reciprocating carriage, means are proviaed for laying the cloth from either end of the carriage, for preventing wrinkles from being formed in the clothes when laid, and for adjusting the machine for different widths of cloth. The carriage, Figs. 1 and 2, has side walls 11 in which are mounted a number of tension rollers 13 under and over which the fabric 14 passes, and a roller 16 at each end level with and projecting beyond the base-plate 28, upon which the cloth rests. Upon projections 15 of the side walls are also mounted rollers 17 lower than the rollers 16 and having extended journals 18, on which are freely pivoted links carrying at their other ends traction rollers 20, which prevent the cloth from wrinkling. To adjust the machine for different widths of cloth, a gaugle-plate 21 of the same shape as the walls 11 is provided, and is held In place on the base-plate by means of a screw 25 fitting in holes 24, the adjustment of the end rollers 20 being made by means of adjustable collars 22. The carriage is mounted on detachable flanged wheels mounted in brackets having extensions 9 adjustable in transverse guideways 10. The table on which the cloth is folded is provided with short standards 26, 26', against which press the rods 27 inserted between the successive folds. The cloth may be placed on any suitable support instead of on the carriage.
